Ranking in the search engine results pages (SERP) is crucial to getting traffic to your website. Link building is a significant factor in building up your SERP rankings as well as your site’s PageRank (PR).
Developing an effective link building strategy is key to your success and the long term value of your website. Quality backlinks to your site provide indicators to the search engines that your site is worthwhile, authoritative and trustworthy. Google is constantly updating their algorithm to differentiate spammy backlinks (link pointing at your site) from genuine backlinks. Therefore, purchasing a bunch of low-quality links is no longer an effective strategy.
So, how do you build quality backlinks?
The best method for developing quality backlinks is to produce quality content. When people find your site, if there is value-added content, there is a good chance they will link back to your site or even add your site to their blogroll.
When you have quality content, people will linger longer, decreasing your bounce rate which is another indicator to search engines that your are a credible site.
Another effective technique for link building is to comment on other blogs or websites in your niche. If you leave an interesting comment, people will want to click on your site. This is also another indicator to a search engine.
Just as you can comment on blogs, you can provide value in forums and place a link in your signature. Take time to understand the rules of the forum and NEVER be a spammer.
Write articles relevant to your niche and offer a guest post or submit to article directories. If you can find a blog in your niche that has a PR of 3 or above even better. Search engines place more value on sites with higher PR.

- Answer questions in Yahoo! Answers
- Write a HubPage or Squidoo Lens with relevant links to your site
- Create a Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising campaign
When you start developing your backlinks, don’t just think about SEO…remember your readers. There is a delicate balance to this strategy. While you want to increase in the SERPs, there is nothing more valuable than a regular visitor to your site. Bottom line: don’t be a spammer and let your backlinks develop naturally.
It is becoming more and more important to develop a legitimate link building strategy. While there will be tempting shortcuts like buying or swapping links, take the time to build up the reputation of your website the right way. In the end, the hard work will be worth the effort.
