If you are involved with Internet marketing in any capacity, you have probably heard the phrase “the money is in the list.” The list that is being referenced here is your website subscriber list. In essence, this motto means the larger the subscriber list, the more opportunities you have to make a sale.
This list is built by using an autoresponder and placing a form on your site asking people to enter their name and address in exchange for some type of information (i.e. newsletter, free report).
When people opt-in as your subscriber, you have the potential to directly influence them through email. While your emails should provide value and helpful information, you will also use this list to influence the subscribers into buying a product you are promoting.
Just to give you more incentive to build a list, here are some more reasons this part of your marketing campaign is important.
1. Builds trust. Establishing yourself as a trusted authority in your niche is very important. With so many marketers flooding people’s inbox with sales promotions and pressure to buy, buy, buy, building a relationship founded on trust is crucial. Providing consistant value and free advice sets the foundation for when you promote an affiliate or a product of your own. Give a little, get a lot.
2. The ability to reach out to many people at once. You may have a few people that read your blog religiously, but most may only read it once or every so often. Having direct access through email means you can send out a message to a mass quantity at once.
3. Repeat customers. Just as someone may walk into a store and make one purchase and never return again, the same holds true for a website. However, just as a store sends you emails or flyers to your email when you sign up on their website/in store, your subscriber list is essentially the same thing. How many times did you you make multiple purchases from a site based on email links you received? Having a list means you won’t easily be forgotten.
4. Bigger potential for sales. Well, this is the core of the above-mentioned phrase. Ultimately, you want to make a sale from your list (or repeat sales). When someone opts-in, they are giving you permission to send them information – they must be somewhat interested in your product if they signed up on your list. This makes them targeted prospects and more likely to buy something niche related.
Having an email list is something to be valued. It is important when you send messages through your email that you do not bombard your subscribers with just sales promotions. Pass on special deals, discounts, free information, etc. Do not come across as a pest or a spammer. If you can do this, you will save yourself from people from unsubscribing.
